Portraits - women in science

Dr Mary Lyon - MRC Mammalian Genetics Unit, Harwell

Dr Lyon discovered that one of the sex X chromosomes is switched off during the development of a female resulting in patchy tortoise-shell coats in mice.  This portrait shows Mary absorbed in her research.

It’s my choice - University of Bristol

This painting shows a patient making a decision about their health.  It combines the human story with a background that suggests the immense amount of work involved in clinical trials to produce medicines.

Universities and Institutes

Signaling - Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine, University of Oxford

This triptych shows the initiation of a signaling cascade. As a molecule binds to the cell surface, the signal can be seen spreading, like ripples on a pond prompting long-term changes within the cell.  ‘Signaling’ was commissioned to capture this dynamic topic which lies at the heart of the WIMM.

Networks - Bioinformatics and Systems Biology, University of Birmingham

This painting is based on the theme of connections, images of phylogenetic trees, protein interaction networks and internet connectivity but also appears to resemble growing plants, neurones or outer space.
